Analysing a Rock Video (No.1)

 The first Rock video that I am going to be analysing is Numb by Linkin Park.

This song involves a variety of different elements and media terminology throughout the whole of the video. Here are some examples.

Mise en Scene: The Mise en Scene that was used throughout the whole of the clip involved a variety of different micro-elements. For example, the costume that each member of the band were using was dark leather colours. The costume for the school pupils were normal American type of clothing to represent that they live in America. The props that the band were using throughout the music video were instruments i.e. electric guitar, keyboard, drumkit, bass guitar and mic.

Cinematography: The cinematography that the music video was using involved a variety of different shot types and angles. For example, there were close ups of instruments being played and there were mid shots of each band member. there were also some long/mid shots of school pupils to represent the emotion from each school member. the girl student or the protagonist of the video wasmostly getting close ups to see her expression and she was the character that had the most camera shots toshow that she is the most important student for the music video.

Editing: The editing wasused very effectively throughout the whole of the clip. One of the examples i can give is the cut aways. Some of the cut aways were used to perfection because some of the cuts were in time of the beat of the music which gave it that little extra effectiveness. The editing also revealed fast motion movements throughout some of the shots. This washappening when the female student was looking around her location which made her be the odd one out. This again signifys that she is the most important student for the music video.

Sound: The sound was used very effectively as well throughout the clip. For example, dynamic levels. The dynamic level was used very successfully because there were points in which it was very loud and there were some parts where it was very quiet. For example, the loud parts that I found through this video was the start when the electric guitar was playing for the intro. It was also quiet for every chorus taking place for the song. The parts of the song that were mostly quiet was when the verses were being played. The reason for this is because the vocalisation and the use of instrumentation were lower on the dynamics. The instrument that was used in the verses were the piano whereas the instruments in the chorus were the electric guitar and the drum kit with louder vocalisations.
