The second Rock song that i will be analysing in this task will be Holiday by Green Day.
This song involves all four elements and has so many micro-elements. This song uses all four elements very effectively and successfully.
Mise en Scene: The Mise en Scene was probably the most effective element out of the four elements. There are many reasons for this. The first reason for this is because of the costume. The costume was used perfectly throughout the clip as the band members of Green Day were using black clothing to represent the rock culture. Not only the costume made this music video very successful, but also the use of props made this music video look very outstanding. The props that the band were using were uses of instrumentation, such as electric guitar, bass guitar, drumkit and Mic. The also involved and microphone in the bridge part of the song. This prop was used in the music video to show there role of the music video and what they had to do to make the music video become very successful.
Sound: The sound in the music video was used very effectively and successfully throughout the whole music video. The way the sound was used so successfully in the music video was because of the use of dynamics. There were various changes towards the dynamics which made this music video become very successful. For example, in the verses and the choruses, there were loud dynamics. These parts of the song was very important because the band wanted to get attention from the audience in order to make the audience like this song. The use of low dynamics were used effectively as well throughout the clip. For example, the bridge of the song went from loud to dropping straight down to very quiet. This is again seems very effective as it catches the audiences attention and changes the mood of the song by simply using different instrumentational skills and use of different vocalisation.
Editing: Editing in this music video seemed to be very effective throughout the music video as it became very successful throughout the entire music video. the way how this music video became so successful and effective from the editing was the cutaways. The cutaways were used to perfection as some of the cuts were in time with the music to give it that extra effect for the music video. Not only cutaways became so successful, but also the shot durations were used differently throughout the whole clip which again gave the music video more success. The way how the shot durations were so successful; was that they all had different shot durations which means something different was going on throughout the whole of the music video.
Cinematography: The cinematography throughout the whole of the clip was used very effectively and showed a lot of fantastic stuff throughout the whole of the music video. For example, the music video involved a numerous amount of shot types which made it fantastic and excellent to watch. The shots that were involved in the music video were; Close Ups (to show band members facial expressions and something that was important). Mid Shots/Medium Shots (To show more than one person in the shot and to see something happening in the background). Long shots (To see the whole band and again to see something in the background if it is important). Not only the shot types were important throughout the whole music video, but also the use of angles were used effectively as well. There were low angles to represent the band having a higher status which means they had control over the video but there were points that involved them having a lower status because of song being in a minor key. Not only that, but some of the lyrics revealed that this was in a minor key to show that the band had a low status throughout the clip.
